Welcome to Nurse SHIFT Change Movement

Nurses SHIFT Change Movement – Grounded in Humanity. Guided by Ethics. Driven by Science. Committed to Social Justice.

One day, everyone will be a patient. One day, everyone will need a nurse.

When that day comes, will your care reflect dignity, fairness, and access for all?

At the Nurses SHIFT Change Movement, we believe healthcare should be rooted in humanity, uphold the highest ethical standards, be informed by science, and advance social justice. We are advocating for the future of nursing and the wellbeing of every patient—because a thriving, well-supported nursing workforce that reflects its community is essential to building a healthier society and a more just healthcare system.

This is more than a movement. It's a call to care, a call to lead, a call to act.

Nurses SHIFT Change: We Are the Shift. We Are the Change.

Nurses SHIFT Change: We Are the Shift. We Are the Change.

The Nurses Shift Change Movement is a national call to action uniting nurses to reclaim the soul of the profession through advocacy, humanity, and collective power. Rooted in the principles of Humanity, Ethics, Science, and Social Justice (HESS), we mobilize nurses to lead beyond the bedside, confront systemic injustice, and shape a future where equity and compassion guide healthcare for all. Through initiatives like the Report for Duty Rally, we activate the voice of nursing to protect our communities, uplift our colleagues, and demand transformative change in health and society.

About Us

We are a collective of nurses, healthcare professionals, and allies rooted in the belief that healthcare is a human right—and that nurses have both the moral responsibility and the collective power to lead meaningful change.

Nurses SHIFT Change to reflect the heart of who we are:

• SHIFT, because nearly every nurse has worked a shift—and we understand the responsibility that comes with caring for others, moment by moment.

• SHIFT, because as the most trusted profession and nearly 5 million strong, nurses have the power to shift culture, policy, and practice toward something better.

• CHANGE, because change is not something we wait for—it’s something we lead.

We are nurses.

We are the shift.

We are the change.

2. Ethics

We uphold the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and professional responsibility. 3. Science

We believe in the power of evidence-based practice and innovation. Grounded in clinical expertise and research, we use science to inform solutions that improve patient outcomes and healthcare systems.

4. Social

Justice We recognize the impact of systemic inequities on health and are committed to advancing equity in healthcare. We advocate for fair access, representation, and policies that uplift underserved and marginalized communities.

Policy Goals

Main Pillar: Ensuring Access to High-Quality Healthcare

Everyone deserves access to affordable, high-quality, and patient-centered healthcare. Achieving this requires strong healthcare policies, investment in preventive care, and a well-supported nursing workforce.

Sub Pillars:

Expanding Access to Affordable, High-Quality Care

• Support policies that ensure all individuals have access to high-quality, affordable healthcare

• Protect and strengthen Medicare & Medicaid funding to prevent service disruptions and maintain essential healthcare coverage.

Strengthening Primary & Preventive Care

• Expand federal, state, and local funding for primary care, preventive health, and public health initiatives to improve long-term outcomes.

• Increase investment in community-based and rural healthcare services to close gaps in access to primary and preventive care.

• Enhance early health education and literacy programs to equip individuals with the knowledge needed to navigate the healthcare system and make informed decisions.

Protecting & Strengthening the Healthcare Workforce

• Enforce national standards for safe staffing ratios to improve patient safety and reduce nurse burnout.

• Implement workplace protections that address safety, violence prevention, and mental health support for nurses and healthcare workers.

• Ensure healthcare teams reflect the communities they serve, leading to stronger patient-provider relationships and improved health outcomes. Patients are healthiest when the healthcare workforce reflects the communities served.

Why This Matters:

By addressing these priorities, we create a healthcare system that puts patients first, supports healthcare professionals, and ensures high-quality care for all. Nurses are essential in shaping these changes, and their leadership is critical to building a stronger, more sustainable healthcare system.
